Mara Kent is a 1993 graduate of the University of Michigan and a 1996 summa cum laude graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where she graduated second in her law school class.  Mara was on the editorial staff of the law review and a member of the moot court board of directors.  She received numerous scholarships and awards during law school, including the American Association of Corporate Counsel scholarship, the Dean’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence, the Irish-American Lawyer’s scholarship, and won book awards for Civil Procedure, Corporations, Agency & Partnership, and Employee Rights.  While in law school, Mara worked for two years at the Ford Motor Company, Office of the General Counsel, employment litigation division.  Following law school, she served as a judicial law clerk for Michigan Supreme Court Justice Michael F. Cavanagh.  She then entered private practice in Ann Arbor where she did a variety of legal work including commercial law, appellate law, medical malpractice defense, personal injury, some criminal work, and matrimonial litigation.  In 2000, Mara was invited to join the faculty of Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where she served as a full professor with tenure until 2014.  Mara’s areas of expertise included contract law, sale and lease of goods, negotiable instruments, as well as legal research and writing.  While teaching full time, Mara also served as a cooperating attorney for the ACLU of Michigan and as a volunteer for the teen court program in Ingham County, Michigan.  Mara remains a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Western Michigan University, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where she is occasionally asked to teach commercial law as a visiting professor.

Mara re-entered private practice in 2014, opening her own firm, Mara Kent Law, PLLC, which specialized in commercial law, business transactions, estate planning, and probate law.  She joined Bassett Law in the summer of 2015, bringing her practice with her.  Mara’s areas of practice include transactional law, contract law, real estate, estate planning, trust administration, probate administration, Medicaid planning, guardianships, conservatorships, and adoptions.

When Mara is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her husband Tom and their two teenage daughters.  She is an artist who enjoys painting and photography, and she is also a life-long runner.
